Heather's
career in netball was filled from the outset with ambition and
determination for sucess. Her desire was fostered by her forerunners
Ivol Roberts, Sandra Phillip and Cherril St. Louis.l
Her
first step into the arena
was with her school team, Intermediate Roman Catholic of Point Fortn
as a goal keeper at the age of eleven. She eventually went on
to represent St. Patrick's Education Division in the
Secondary School Netball Competition and later played for Dynamos
Sports and Cultural Club.
In 1974, at age sixteen,
she was selected as! "Golden Girl" of the San Fernando Netball
League, while playing for Sunsetters Netball Team. In that
very year she became a member of the Southern Netball Team. This
eventually led to her selection on; the Trinidad and Tobago Netball
Team as a goal keeper to play against England at home in 1978.
Her display at the game
was of a high quality and she was named "Most Outstanding Under-21
Player".
In 1979 Heather became a
member of Hoyte's Trotters Netball Club, and was selected to
represent the San Fernando Netball League in the West Indian Tobacco
Company Under-21 Tournament held in Tobago. At this Tournament she
played in the position of goal defence.
Later that same year she
was selected to the National Team as a wing defense to represent
Trinidad and Tobago in the Fifth World Championship held in
Trinidad. At the end of the Championship the players of the National
Team together with Heather, were; recipients of the Chaconia Medal
(gold) from the' Government of Trinidad and Tobago. The subsequent
year saw her off to St. Kitts with the National Team to play in the
Caribbean Championship. In 1981 she traveled with Hoyte's Trotters
Netball Team to Canada, where she was named "Most Outstanding
Defense". On her return home she was named "Most Outstanding Player"
of 1982 for her standard of play in that year.
In
1983 she was
on the National Tarn to the Caribbean Championships held in Bermuda.
Her performance at that championship resulted in her being named
"One of the Three Most Outstanding Players of the Championship".
Back home she was
selected Vice-Captain of the National Team to tour England as part
of the preparation for the Sixth World Championship held in
Singapore in 1983. She continued to retain her position as
Vice-Captain on the National Team for the Caribbean Championship and
for the visiting Australian Institute of Sport Team in 1984. Her cup
continued to run over for in that same year in the San Fernando
League, she was voted "Player of the Year" and received the
prestigious award of "South Sport Personality".
Her ascendancy to the
captaincy of the National Team in 1985 was made possible when the
then national captain Sherril Peters announced her retirement from
competitive netball. Heather proved her worth as the team's captain
at the Round Robin Tournament held in Australia and toured New
Zealand with the team before returning home to play in the Caribbean
Netball Championship held in Nevis. Playing with "Paradise Amusement
Lakers" and captain of the team from 1986, she was instrumental in
leading the club to both the League and Knockout titles of the
Southern Ladies League. She was the captain of the League's
representative team which played against the visiting Guelph
University of Canada. At the same time she was the Captain of the
South Netball Team.
That same year she played
in the Caribbean Netball Championship held in St. Lucia and was also
one of the 25 players selected to represent Caribbean Netball in
England at Wembley in November of 1987,
In 1986 she was nominated
by the National body for the West Indian Tobacco Company Sports
Woman of the Year Award.
The Seventh World Netball
Championship held in Glasgow, Scotland, in August 1987 was her third
and final championship. She was also given the chance to captain the
first West Indian team ever to tour England and Wales.
In 1988 she went to the
Tenth Caribbean Netball Championship held in the Cayman Islands. She
also played on invitational games that same year.
In 1989, she was again
selected to tour Australia with the Caribbean Netbal 1 Association's
West Indies • team.
A regular umpire with the
National Association, she used her acquired knowledge to coach the
National Under-18 Netball Team in 1984. when they played against a
visiting Jamaican school team.
Heather who is always
willing to impart knowledge of netball to others says her best
moments in netball were in the Seventh World Championship held in
Glasgow, Scotland, where the Trinidad and Tobago Team was filled
with the spirit of an exceptional interplay of harmony, never seen
before.
Heather now resides in the United States with her son, Michael.
