NEDCO,
an initiative of the Ministry of Labour and Small and Micro
Enterprise Development, was established in August 2002, as a limited
liability state-owned Company and was mandated to assist in the
development of a sustainable small and micro enterprise (SME) sector
through entrepreneurship.
In the course of effecting its mandate, NEDCO's thrust and emphasis
will be on:
PROMOTING
entrepreneurial awareness through the country
DISSEMINATING
consistent and reliable information to the sector
TRAINING
and development initiatives
MENTORING
initiatives
FUNDING
assistance for start-ups and expansions
NEDCO will act as a catalyst in the development of an
entrepreneurial culture in Trinidad and Tobago, employing strategies
that will attract the young and traditionally disenfranchised
sectors of the populace towards business activitiess.
It is estimated that over 90 percent of all new small and micro
businesses fail within the first year of operation. NEDCO aims to
reverse this trend.
Small businesses are the principal contributors to employment
generation in developed and developing nations. Besides providing
jobs, small business owners pay taxes, earn a comfortable living for
the owners and contribute to the economy as a whole.
