I am sure that
some of you here are asking yourselves
DOCK OF THE BAY! – WEY
DEY COME FROM?
Well! What started out as a
casual lime at Frisco Junction – underneath Peiping
Supermarket, Markie John’s Parlour, Eddy’s Store and yes on
the round-about, in the sixties, by Fred Lewis, Pedro
Wallace, Pinhead, Steve Hector, Raymond Marrast and others, gave
rise to DOCK OF THE BAY SPORT AND CULTURAL CLUB.
At Markie John’s Parlour there
used to be this JukeBox, where these guys would go and punch in
their tunes and dance for days on end. They were hooked on
music by JAMES BROWN and WILSON PICKETT, to name a
few singers of that time. Then along came OTIS REDDING
with his soulful renditions, amongst them, SITTING OF THE
DOCK OF THE BAY. That song struck a chord amongst theses
guys and before long when people asked them what they were doing
on the ROUNDABOUT? There reply was quite naturally, “we are
sitting on the DOCK OF THE BAY”. The area then became
known as DOCK OF THE BAY.
However, with the passing of time and the changing of the
guards, Dock of the Bay Sports and Cultural Club was founded in
September 1971 under Peiping Grocery by the they young
limers inclusive of Muhammed Isa, Camilious Ventour, Wilfred
Cave, Fabien Mc Liesh, Annette Belfon, Sluggo John and Mayon
Murray, to name a few of the original members. Whilst one
of the lines in the song says – “sitting on the dock of the bay
wasting time” – the members of this club certainly did the
opposite in their various fields of endeavor.
