Austin
Lyons a/k/a Superblue (formerly known as Blue Boy) was born on May
25, 1956 in Point Fortin, Trinidad. At an early age he taught
himself to make and play steel pan, and then formed his own band,
the Apple Stars Steel Orchestra.
In 1980 Blue boy joined a calypso tent and sang "Soca Baptist", a
song he wrote while on a layover in Santo Domingo in 1979. This tune
took the whole country by storm, and went on to earn him the title
Road March Monarch. "Soca Baptist" was the biggest Road March (*) in
the history of Trinidad Carnival up to that time.
In 1981 he became Road March Monarch for the third time time with
his tune "Rebecca", which was also played by the winners of
Panorama, Witch Desperadoes.
In 1986 Blue Boy helped form, then manage, the calypso tent "Culture
House" and its associated record label. This venture required a lot
of his time, but he still found time to write "Blue Fever", a
runner-up for the Road March. In August he appeared at Socalypso 86
in London. This was the longest live soca festival to be staged in
Europe up to that time.
In 1991 his tune "Get Something And Wave" earned him his fourth Road
March Monarch by a landslide. It surpassed "Soca Baptist" to become
the biggest Road Monarch in the history of Trinidad and Tobago
Carnival. In April he participated in Jamaica’s Carnival, and in
August he returned to London for Socalypso 91 and became the first
calypsonian to ever perform at Wembley Convention Centre in London,
England.
In 1992 Superblue was crowned Road March Monarch for the fifth time
with his tune "Jab-Jab". This landslide victory surpassed that of
1991 to become the biggest Road March in the history of Carnival. He
once again participated in Jamaica Carnival, performing for over
10,000 revelers in the "Cove". In August he performed in New York
City’s Central Park, and converted the huge multinational crowd into
"socaphiles".
In 1993 Superblue was crowned Road March Monarch for the sixth time
with his tune "Bachannal Time". Like his previous victories, this
landslide win became the biggest in Carnival history. It was also
the first time a competition was held to determine "Soca Monarch of
Trinidad and Tobago"; the title and accompanying T&T$25,000 were
awarded to Superblue by unanimous acclaim. His performance of "Bachannal
Time" and "Birthday Party" were featured on the first worldwide
broadcast of Trinidad and Tobago Carnival via CNN. "Bachannal Time"
has also been declared the road March for Atlanta, Toronto (Caribana),
London, New York and Miami Carnivals.
In March 93 he received the awards for Calypso Record of the year
(Jab-Jab) and Calypso Album of the Year ( In The Power) at the Third
Annual Caribbean Music Awards held in New York City. In October he
received the awards for Calypso Record of the Year ( In The Power)
and Best Party Tune of the year (Jab-Jab) at the Fifth Annual
Calypso and Steelband Music Awards held in New York City. In July he
performed for thousands at New York’s South Street Seaport. In
August he toured England performing in Leeds, Reading, Le Palais in
Hammersmith, and the WOMAD Music Festival in St. Austell, Cornwall.
In September he appeared on "Best Talk" on WPIX, a major New York
television network.
During his career, Superblue has toured the Caribbean, Canada,
Europe and the United States, spreading the music and culture of
Trinidad and Tobago. His on-stage performance has no equal. He is
truly the Music Cultural Ambassador of Trinidad and Tobago. Ice
Records proudly presents Superblue’s latest offering FLAG PARTY, an
album filled with delectable delights, and including in-depth liner
notes written by Gene Scaramuzzo, Soca Aficionado.
