POINT FORTIN 1900 – 2000 |

Arthur Beeby – Thompson |
In 1906, Point Fortin, then
known as La Fortunee, was visited by a geologist, Arthur Beeby –
Thompson. These visits radically transformed the area for all times.
After one such visit, in the book “ Oil Pioneer ” he wrote: “This
preliminary reconnaissance however made it clear that oil measures
covered a broad strip of territory stretching inland from Point
Fortin and incorporating much land in the Guapo region.”
“As access was
important and facilities for export essential, I fixed upon Point
Fortin as the most suitable place, not only for that purpose, but
also for the establishment of a healthy township upon a headland
swept by sea breezes.”
“And in order to
secure adequate space for the installation of stores, workshop and
ancillary plant, with probable refinery, it became necessary to
secure possession of two freehold waterside estates, La Fortunee and
Adventure.”
(Towns and
Villages, Michael Anthony.)
